"It has all the bells and whistles of a country festival that we all love, and then there’s the folklore of nearby Klipnocky Forest that you may not know of."
September 15th and 16th
If you have never been north to the Canaseraga Fall Harvest Festival than you need to get there this year. It has all the bells and whistles of a country festival that we all love, and then there’s the folklore of nearby Klipnocky Forest that you may not know of.
The festival has been going on since 1999, and is one full of fun, creativity, talents, cars, arts, crafts, foods, and community gathering. It all takes place in the Village Park, and is one of the best kept secrets of Allegany County small town annual events.
This year’s festival runs Saturday, September 15th, and Sunday, September 16th, but if you’re in town on Friday and stop by at the Steuben Trust Bank on Main Street you can have a free hot dog and a drink. It’s customer appreciation day!
Saturday’s events start at 10:00 am and go until 6:00 pm:
The Scarecrow Walk takes place down Potomac Avenue to the festival grounds. Come dressed in your best Scarecrow attire and compete for cash prizes.
Shepard Pi makes a musical return to the festival and will provide wonderful entertainment.
At 11:00 it’s searching and grabbing through the Sawdust Pile for those 0-12 years of age in different age groups for a chance at money and other prizes.
Noon begins the Canaseraga Idol Contest where four age groups and an adult category has the many talents of the area compete for one of the top three places in each group.
The Hay Bale Push, takes place at 3:00 pm where teams of three or more people push, shove, and roll a giant bale of hay from one end of the field to the other. Everything counts in this competition. You even get points of how your team chooses to dress while performing the task.
More music begins at 4:00 pm and balloon tethered rides start at 5:00 pm.
Sunday’s events start at 9:30 am and go until 6:00 pm:
Old-time hymns will play for the Community Song Service from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
The Classic Car Show begins at 10:00 am.
More music takes to the stage at 11:00 am.
At 1:00 pm it is the Hairy Women of Klipnocky entertainment. The who? This is the folklore of the festival. Women raised in the wilderness by themselves without parents in the woods of nearby Klipnocky Forest. Once a year they come to town in search of a partner. Anyone, any age, any gender, can enter for a chance to win cash. Just come dressed as a hairy woman. You need to perform a talent too. Judging is done by the audience, and perfection is not an issue. Talents vary as much as the women do. It is the best part of the festival each year . . . you will never think of the people of the forest the same once you’ve seen the Hairy Women of Klipnocky!
Don’t forget to check out the produce, vendors, arts, crafts, and the chicken barbecue while there. It’s all good!
Winners of the raffles are announced and trophies for the car show are handed out, before the ending of the festival.
